10 Most Popular Digital News and Current Affairs Publishers in Nigeria
In 2023, RANKED by SquireelPR tracked over 80 most influential digital news publishers in Nigeria, and found that the News and Current Affairs publishers account for 82% of total readership of digital news in Nigeria. 

In this post, we highlight the 10 of the most popular News and Current Affairs category in their ranking order per RANKED.

1. LEGIT: Up until 2018, Legit.ng was known as Naij.com. It is the 7th most visited news website in Nigeria, and ranks as number one in Nigeria News and Current Affairs, per RANKED.

Legit.ng was founded in 2012 by Legit (ex-GMEM) and since then, has only grown in influence in the online news industry. 

According to RANKED by SquirrelPR, Legit.ng generates millions visits per quarter and a cumulative 208 million visits in 2023 alone. 

2. PUNCH ONLINE: Punch Online which serves readers through its website punchng.com and its mobile Punch, its mobile application was established in 1970 primarily as a print newspaper.

While its print edition still commands the highest circulation in Nigeria, its online edition ranks as the second most popular news website in Nigeria with over 176 million visits in 2023 alone.

According to Statista.com, 83% of users said that they trust Punch newspaper as a source of daily news, with visitor demography cutting across Nigeria - 49.25%, the United States - 16.33% and the United Kingdom - 13.13%. 

3. VANGUARD ONLINE: The third most visited online newspaper in Nigeria is the Vanguardngr.com.
Founded in 1984 by the co-founder of Punch Newspaper, Mr. Sam Amuka, the influential newspaper still publishes the Daily Vanguard, Saturday Vanguard and Sunday Vanguard.
Vanguard Online generated about 150 million visits in 2023, according to RANKED by SquirrelPR.

4. DAILY POST: Daily Post is a Nigerian newspaper that launched its print version in 2015. It publishes local news on sports, entertainment, politics and business.

Daily Post is the fourth most visited digital news platform in Nigeria per RANKED under the News and Current Affairs category, with over 126 million visits in 2023 alone.

5. OPERA NEWS APP: Opera News App is the news aggregator app developed by Opera browser, and quite popular in Africa.

Recent reports suggest that 8 out of 10 persons in a Africa relies on the Opera News App as a source of news.

The Opera news app was launched in Africa in 2018 and has quickly grown to become the most popular news app on the continent.

In 2029, it became the most downloaded mobile app on the continent with over 15 million installs, per Sensor Tower. 

Per RANKED by SquirrelPR, the Opera News App generated about 80 million visits in 2023 alone, with most of them coming from Facebook followed by Quora and then Twitter.
